Date Sold 12/10/2017Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Linenbacked Yugoslavian World War II Propaganda Poster (measures 27 1/4" x 39" [69 x 99 cm]) (Learn More) All Idiotic Brotherhoods (literal translation of the Cyrillic text), the 1941 Yugoslavian World War II (WWII) poster (with taglines that translate to "The Anti-Masonic exhibit. Whose work is included? English-American autocrats. Those against democratic immigration. Bloody Soviet aristocrats. And all idiotic brotherhoods"). Note that this poster was created for the Grand Anti-Masonic Exhibition which opened in Belgrade and was organized by former members of the Yugoslav National Movement. The exhibit sought to expose an alleged Judeo-Masonic/Communist conspiracy for world domination through several displays featuring anti-Semitic propaganda. The Yugoslav National Movement (also known as the United Militant Labour Organization) was a fascist movement that started in 1935 and was led by Yugoslavian politician Dimitrije Ljotic. It was supported both financially and politically by Nazi Germany, who wanted to use it to make Yugoslavia easier to invade, but while the movement participated in the 1935 and 1938 Yugoslavian elections, it did not receive more than 1% of the vote in either, so ultimately, the Nazis changed course and invaded Yugoslavia in 1941 and occupied it. This poster was created in 1941, not that long before the Nazis invaded Yugoslavia, and it depicts a stereotypical Jewish man holding a Jewish star that contains art images of Draza Mihailovic (a Yugoslav Serb general) literally holding figures of Uncle Sam and John Bull, who are playing with a baby-sized Emperor Hirohito of Japan (who has a baby pacifier!), and the general is also holding a baby-sized crying Joseph Stalin, who is holding a hammer and sickle, all over art of Yugoslavia literally on fire, and the above taglines are in the points of the star! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this remarkable poster, which we have never auctioned before, is surely incredibly rare. It was consigned to us from the owner of the amazing collection of political and war posters which we auctioned on November 19, 2017. He "held back" a few of his most rare and most interesting posters, but he has now consigned those remaining ones to us, and they are being auctioned in this December Major Auction (and this is one of them). It is likely that this poster and the others can only be found in museum collections (if they can be found at all), and this is a very rare opportunity to obtain this poster. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had very minor wear on the folds, with tiny paper loss at the left end of the top horizontal fold, and a tiny bit of paper loss near the bottom of the vertical fold, in the solid yellow area. It had some tiny pinholes around the edges. There is unevenness in the solid colored areas, that may be the result of smudges and scuffs, or it could simply be the type of paper that was used (see our super-sized image). Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
