An Original Vintage Exhibitor Magazine (measures 9 1/4" x 12 1/2" [23 x 32 cm]; 162 pages) (Learn More) Spartacus, the classic 1960 Stanley Kubrick sword-and-sandal Ancient Wars gladiator sports action adventure epic ("Winner of 4 Academy Awards!"; "They trained him to kill for their pleasure... But they trained him a little too well..."; "A mighty motion picture!"; "Based on the novel by Howard Fast"; written by Dalton Trumbo) starring Kirk Douglas (in the title role as Spartacus), Laurence Olivier (as Crassus, who liked both oysters and snails, or was it truffles and artichokes?), Jean Simmons, Charles Laughton (as Gracchus), Peter Ustinov (winner of the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Woody Strode (as Draba), Tony Curtis ("as Antoninus"), John Gavin (as Julius Caesar), Charles McGraw (as the gladiator trainer), and Herbert Lom. Note that Kirk Douglas was the producer of this movie and originally Anthony Mann was directing. But three weeks into filming, Douglas fired Mann and replaced him with Stanley Kubrick, who then fired Sabine Bethmann, who had been the female lead, and replaced her with Jean Simmons! Also note that Dalton Trumbo had been blacklisted during the HUAAC hearings in the early 1950s, and he was still blacklisted at this time, so he was not going to receive screen credit. Kubrick heard this and wanted to be given the screenwriter credit (since someone had to be credited), but producer Douglas courageously insisted on Trumbo receiving the credit on screen, which effectively ended the blacklist! Artist: Saul Bass Important Added Info: Note that this is the February 29, 1960 issue of Boxoffice magazine, their special yearly "Boxoffice Barometer" issue. That issue would give a preview of the top movies planned for the coming year and would also give the results of an annual popularity poll that they held among theater owners as to who were the most popular male and female movie stars during the previous year (and note that this could be different from the public's perception, because all theater owners cared about were the stars whose movies brought them the most box office revenues!). These annual issues are usually much more difficult to find than the regular weekly issues. We have only provided a picture of the front cover of the magazine, because that has great Saul Bass (note the "Designed by Saul Bass & Assoc.") cover art for Spartacus, but of course, the rest of the issue has much interesting information and ads for other movies of that time. Finally, note that this is one of eight lots that contain ultra rare exhibitor magazines with Saul Bass art ads. These magazines are exceptionally scarce, especially the ones that have ads with Saul Bass art! Condition: good to very good. Note that we have attempted to check to see if the magazine is complete and uncut, and we believe that it is. However, there is a slight possibility that we might have missed a small cut or a page that was neatly removed, and if that happens, you can return the magazine. Learn More about condition grades
