An Original Vintage Theatrical French Lobby Card (LC; measures 10 3/4" x 13 3/4" [27 x 35 cm]) (Learn More)

La Grande Illusion (released in the U.S. in 1938 as "Grand Illusion"), the classic 1937 Jean Renoir French France Germany World War I (WWI) anti-war military prisoner of war (POW) melodrama (nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; many people rightfully consider this movie to be one of the handful of absolute finest movies ever made!) starring Jean Gabin, Dita Parlo, Pierre Fresnay, Erich von Stroheim, Julien Carette (billed as "Carette"), Gaston Modot (billed as "Modot"), Georges Peclet (billed as "Peclet"), Marcel Dalio (billed as "Dalio"), and Jean Daste (billed as "Daste"). Note that this is also the rare case of a great movie that was recognized as being truly great right after it was made. It was the first foreign film ever to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, and it certainly deserved to win!

Important Added Info: Note that this lobby card is a "country of origin" lobby card from one of the greatest movies of all time, and we have only previously auctioned the first release French two-panel poster (two times) and a single French still, and no other first release French movie paper of any kind! Note that there is a fascinating snipe in the top border that gives the three top billed male actors, but leaves out Dita Parlo, who was originally second billed. That makes us think that this card was printed with the original credits but was used when the movie was re-shown, likely during the time when Parlo was deported to Germany as an enemy alien (she was allowed to return in 1949). Also note that we have never before auctioned ANY French lobby cards from this movie! ANY French lobby cards from before World War II are incredibly rare. The person who consigned this also consigned a larger French lobby card that measures 15" x 19 3/4" (and we are auctioning that in a separate auction).

Note that this French lobby card was created by the distributor by creating a set of identical stiff board printed backings, with a blank space for a still, and then they would attach a number of stills to a number of different boards, thus creating a set of French lobby cards. Also note that this French lobby card measures 10 3/4" x 13 3/4" [27 x 35 cm].

Condition: good. There are tack holes and stains around the edges, with some faint smudges, scuffs, and tiny scratches in the image (see our image).
