Date Sold 12/6/2015Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Linenbacked Circus Poster (measures 36 3/4" x 41" [93 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Ringling Bros and Barnum & Bailey Circus, the 1936 circus poster ("The Great Yacopi Troupe Argentine acrobatic marvels without equal"; "Presenting Col. Tim McCoy screen's greatest western star"; "Two performances daily - afternoon & night") held on August 4-6 in Madison, Wisconsin, and featuring great art of flying acrobats! Note that Tim McCoy left Hollywood in 1935 and, joined The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Combined Circus. He left it in 1936 to form his own "Wild West Show", but his own show did poorly, and soon closed. Over the next 30 years, he appeared with many circuses. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. The modern version of the circus started in 1919 when the Barnum & Bailey's Greatest Show on Earth, a circus created by P. T. Barnum and James Anthony Bailey, was merged with the Ringling Bros. World's Greatest Shows. With weakening attendance and high operating costs, the circus closed on May 21st, 2017 after 146 years. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster has metal grommets in each corner (they were surely put there either when it was created or when it was used at a circus). There is a paper snipe glued to the bottom of the poster that has a small tear in the top left (above the "PR" of "PRESENTING"). There are just a few tiny tears and stains in the top and bottom borders, and a light horizontal crease across the center of the paper snipe. The poster is on a thin linen that we imagine was added at the same time the paper snipe was, or else it would not be on the back of both the poster and the snipe. The above defects are not that significant, one could display this wonderful poster just as it is, or one could choose to have it properly linenbacked, first removing the old linen (and during that time, one could choose whether to keep the snipe at the bottom or to not keep it, but it certainly lends a lot of history to the poster). Note that the person who owned this poster stored it rolled, with the image area rolled outward, so it will be sent to the new owner in that way. Learn More about condition grades
