If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we can't say for 100% certain that this poster is from 1872, but we found references to this traveling show being performed in 1872 and 1873, and we feel certain that it is from one of those two years! It is an amazing historical document that seems like it should be displayed in a museum. Note that in the late 1800s, posters advertising stage plays were often "daybills", which resemble U.S. inserts in size, but were printed on one-sheet paper, and were sometimes double-sided (similar daybills were used to advertise circuses at that time). These daybills would rarely have any artwork, but rather would list all of the varied entertainments available at the show. They were put on the sides of buildings and on poles, and were completely disposable, and very few of them survive. These types of posters also exist for the earliest days of motion pictures (at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th), when movies were all quite short (usually several minutes each), and were shown at vaudeville theaters, and they used the same type of poster. Condition: good. The poster was folded, and it also has many creases throughout. It has many tears and some tiny bits of paper loss around the edges, and a few scattered down the right side of the image. Someone once put a great deal of tape on the back of the poster, mending tears and covering paper loss. If I owned this wonderful poster, I would surely immediately have it professionally backed. The poster is almost completely "all there", and after proper restoration, it will look incredible! Learn More about condition grades
