An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Style D One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The Devil's Brother (also released as "Fra Diavolo"), the 1933 Hal Roach & Charley Rogers 17th century Italy romantic bandit musical comedy ("From The famous Comic Opera 'Fra Diavolo' by Auber"; also produced by Hal Roach; about a famed Italian bandit, who poses as a nobleman in order to get close to rich people and then rob them; Stan and Ollie join with the bandit, with outrageous comic results!) starring Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy (Laurel and Hardy), Dennis King (in the title role as "Fra Diavolo"), Thelma Todd, James Finlayson, Lucile Browne, Arthur Pierson, and Darla Hood (the future Our Gang member, when she was just 18 months old!) NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Al Hirschfeld Important Added Info: Note that all first release posters from this Laurel & Hardy movie are incredibly rare (in fact, the only first release poster of any size we have ever auctioned from this movie in the past was the style C one-sheet, which was consigned to us from the legendary "Carson Collection" in 1993, when it auctioned for $5,290. But now we have been consigned this style D poster, which has a far superior image, and the artwork is by legendary illustrator Al Hirschfeld! We know of no other examples of this poster, and our consignor tells us that he purchased it nearly 50 years ago! It is interesting to note that Mr. Hirschfeld did not give Oliver Hardy his mustache, and it is the only poster we have seen from this movie (there are several from other countries) where this is true. It certainly is a magnificent poster, and the new owner of it will have a poster that, as far as we know, does not exist anywhere else! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the top crossfold and some creases and scuffs along the folds. It had pinholes and faint stains around the edges, with some extending into the edges of the image. It had a 3" tear near the middle of the right border, extending into the solid yellow background. It had tiny circular paper loss in Hardy's lower lip and a light circular stain in the yellow background below the first "R" of "BROTHER". Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was linenbacked by the late poster restorer, Danny Steward. He restored the poster in a somewhat "minimalist" manner, not wanting to make it "look perfect", and we very much like that sort of restoration, because you can always add restoration later, but you can't take it away, and what is wrong with an 83 year old poster showing its age anyway! Mr. Steward did spend extra time on the defect in Hardy's lower lip, and he did a nice job on it (see our image). The poster can absolutely be displayed and enjoyed as it is, or one could choose to have further restoration performed to the above defects, which are primarily in the borders and background areas. Either way, the new owner will have a wonderful (and possibly unique) poster to display on their wall! Learn More about condition grades
