An Original Vintage Theatrical Color Glos Lobby Card (Learn More) The Grapes of Wrath, the classic 1940 John Ford (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) Depression era family-leaves-the-Dust-Bowl-to-find-a-better-life-in-California melodrama (nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; based on the classic novel by John Steinbeck; produced by Darryl F. Zanuck) starring Henry Fonda (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; as Tom Joad), Jane Darwell (winner of the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for this film; as Ma Joad), Charley Grapewin (as Grandpa Joad), Russell Simpson (as Pa Joad), John Carradine (as Jim Casy), Dorris Bowdon (as Rose-of-Sharon Rivers, spelled as "Rosasharn" in the movie credits), Zeffie Tilbury (as Grandma Joad), Frank Darien (as Uncle John Joad), Eddie Quillan (as Connie Rivers), John Qualen (as Muley Graves), Kitty McHugh (as the diner waitress, in one of the movie's most poignant scenes), Darryl Hickman (as Winfield Joad), and Shirley Mills (as Ruthie Joad). Note that this is one of the very rare cases where a really great book is turned into a really great movie! It is not entirely faithful to the book, but it certainly captures the "spirit" of the book. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this original still was re-used during a re-release of this movie, and someone wrote the re-release NSS numbers in the left blank border. This IS an original release color glos LC that was simply re-used. Also note that this still is from a special set of "color glos" lobby cards, which means it was printed on a photo type of paper and have a glossier front, with more vivid colors. This is something the studios experimented with in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Condition: good. The still has much paper loss and tears around the edges, with a few pinholes, but it is incredibly fortunate that all the defects are in the white blank borders, with the tiniest bit of the "C" of "Copyright" missing, and a tear extending into two of the letters of the credits (see our image). The image has just a few smudges in the yellow background. There is a piece of paper tape on the back of the center of the left and right borders. If I owned this wonderful still, I would surely have a restorer replace the missing white areas, and after proper restoration, it will look wonderful (but bear this in mind before placing a bid).
