An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Style A One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The Magnificent Lie, the 1931 Berthold Viertel romantic mistaken identity melodrama ("Based on 'Laurels and the Lady' by Leonard Merrick"; about a man who was recently blinded, and he has a great love of a French singing star, and his woman friend pretends to be that singing star, and to fall in love with him, to give him a reason to go on living) starring Ruth Chatterton, Ralph Bellamy, Stuart Erwin, Francoise Rosay, and Charles Boyer. Note that Charles Boyer was a college graduate with a philosophy degree, and he appeared in a few movies in his early 20s. He had greater success in talking movies, thanks to his distinctive French accent (which Chuck Jones "borrowed" for his character Pepe Le Pew), but he had his greatest success in Hollywood in the early 1940s, when many of the top U.S. stars were away in World War II. Important Added Info: Note that this poster has no blank borders, but it has NOT been trimmed. This is something Paramount did from part of 1929 through part of 1931, printing their posters with a "full bleed", meaning the solid borders ran all the way to the edge of the poster, and the small writing at the bottom is within the color area, because there is no white area beneath it. This printing method was abandoned after a short time (probably because printers at the time had difficulty printing with a full bleed). It would not be until around 1990 that printers would again print movie posters with a full bleed! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had its vertical foldline 3" to the left of center, and there were creases, scuffs, and a few tiny tears on parts of the foldlines. There were some smudges and faint dot stains scattered in the background areas. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above, but they are really not very distracting (and a talented restorer could touch them up without re-backing the poster).
