Date Sold 2/23/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) South of the Rio Grande, the 1932 Lambert Hillyer south-of-the-border Mexican cowboy western ("Fighting for love and life!"; about a man who seeks to avenge his brother's suicide after a manipulative woman and her accomplice swindle his family!) starring Buck Jones (billed as "Fearless fighting Buck Jones"), Mona Maris, Doris Hill, Philo McCullough, and George J. Lewis. Note that Buck Jones' white horse was named Silver (just like The Lone Ranger's later on!), and Silver made 73 movies with Buck Jones from 1922 until Jones' death in 1942 in the tragic Cocoanut Grove fire. But oddly, Silver was almost never billed on the posters for Buck Jones' movies as so many other famous horses (most especially Tom Mix's Tony) were! Note that many people consider the one-sheet from this movie (with a striking close up image of Buck Jones with a sombrero against a purple background) to be one of the finest cowboy movie posters ever! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have previously auctioned four examples of this one-sheet, but the last one was 17 years ago (they sold for prices ranging from $2,845 to $8,625)! Many people consider this (along with "Ridin' For Justice") to be the finest cowboy movie posters ever created! Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a light paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (it means that the poster must be handled carefully, as the backing does not give it much added strength, but it is similar to having an unrestored poster, and yet it has been properly preserved). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster had small tears and some tiny areas of paper loss scattered down the entire vertical fold, with a lesser amount on the horizontal folds. There was a partial second horizontal fold, slightly under each of the regular horizontal folds. There were pinholes, tears, and some stains around the edges. There was small paper loss in the bottom right corner that affected the end of the litho number (the litho number originally read M-4374, but the numbers were missing). Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to paperbacking. Many years ago, a restorer paperbacked the poster and performed restoration to the above border and fold defects, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects, more so from close up than from a reasonable viewing distance. Also, the restorer did not have access to the correct litho number, so they painted over the "M" (but that paint could be removed, and the correct litho number could be restored). One could either display this poster as it is, or they might choose instead to have it removed from the paper backing and have modern restoration performed (likely by linenbacking it). Please bear in mind the poster's defects before bidding on it. Learn More about condition grades
