A 1948 Re-Release Theatrical Folded Panamanian Movie Poster (measures 24" x 35 3/4" [61 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) Flying Down to Rio, the classic 1933 Thornton Freeland South America Rio De Janeiro Brazil airplane aviation pilot romantic love triangle musical ("Musical Romance Staged in the Clouds..."; "Too big for the world... So they staged it in the clouds... Too beautiful for words... So they set it to music!"; "Come, take a joy ride through the sky!"; "Romance that soars on the wings of song") starring Dolores Del Rio, Gene Raymond, Paul Roulien, Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire, and Blanche Friderici. Note that this was the first of the ten movies Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers made together, which explains why they were fourth and fifth billed, and not pictured on any poster art! Also note that this movie was made at a time when Hollywood had a "love affair" with South America in general, and Brazil (and Rio de Janeiro). Paul Roulien was a Brazilian singer who came to Hollywood in 1931, and he sang in several movies. In this movie, he was part of a romantic love triangle with Dolores Del Rio and Gene Raymond, and it was his best role. In 1934, he returned to Brazil and quit acting in 1938. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this poster which we have never auctioned before, has "Editora Panama America Abril de 1948" printed in the lower right. It seems to make perfect sense that this means this poster is from a 1948 Panamanian re-release of this movie, but of course we are just basing it on that line of printing. The paper of the poster seems consistent with 1940s paper and we would be surprised if it is from later than that. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Note also that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: fair to good. The poster has many pinholes, smudges and stains around the edges and there is darkening in all the solid areas with smudges and stains in those areas. There is also paper loss and tears at the crossfolds and a few other defects. Obviously this extremely rare poster could be 'rescued" through linenbacking, but bear in mind all of the above before bidding. Learn More about condition grades
