He operated with a group of men known as the Dillinger Gang, which was accused of robbing 24 banks and four police stations, among other activities. He was also charged with (but never convicted of) the murder of an Indiana police officer who shot Dillinger in his bullet-proof vest during a shootout, prompting him to return fire. Dillinger courted publicity and the media of his time ran exaggerated accounts of his bravado and colorful personality, styling him as a Robin Hood figure. He was killed in Chicago on July 22nd of 1934 by Federal agents who were led by Melvin Purvis and Samuel P. Cowley. Dillinger's story has been depicted in books, TV and films. Some of the movies include: Dillinger (with Lawrence Tierney), Public Enemies (with Johnny Depp and Christian Bale), and High Sierra (loosely based on Dillinger and starring Humphrey Bogart) Important Added Info: Note that we have NEVER auctioned any of these wonderful news stills before. With stills like these, one sometimes wonders of they are surely from when the events occurred, but in this case, three of the four stills have great snipes attached to the back and they are all dated from different dates in 1934, so it is a certainty that these ARE from when these photos were first created! Also note that we have pictured the backs of these stills (see our images) and three have a snipe glued on the back with information about the still. Condition: very good.
