Date Sold 1/29/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Insert Movie Poster (measures 14" x 36" [36 x 91 cm]) (Learn More) Trap, the 1946 Howard Bretherton Asian detective crime mystery thriller ("Suggested by Earl Derr Biggers' character") starring Sidney Toler ("as Charlie Chan"), Mantan Moreland, Victor Sen Yung (billed as "Victor Sen Young"; as Jimmy Chan), Tanis Chandler (a French actress who appeared in some Hollywood movies of the 1940s, but she returned to France and became the French dubbed voice for Hollywood actresses when those movies were shown in France!), Larry J. Blake, and Kirk Alyn (two years before his big role as Superman). Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster! We have never auctioned one in all our years of auctioning. Note also that this poster was folded at one time but has been laying flat for a long time and will be sent rolled in a tube. Condition: good to very good. There are a few tears of varying lengths at center right with some separation in the right edge of the center horizontal fold and there are some tears of varying lengths at lower left and the above areas have been backed by tape. The poster also has a few pinholes around the edges and some smudges and light scuff marks scattered in various areas (typical of vintage insert posters that were likely displayed a movie theater at one time.) The rare poster is otherwise in generally nice condition and if one chose to have it backed and restored it would look fantastic! Learn More about condition grades
