An Original Vintage Movie Trade Ad (measures 9 1/4" x 12 1/4" [23 x 31 cm]; 2 pages) (Learn More) Popeye the Sailor Meets Ali Baba's Forty Thieves, the 1937 Dave Fleischer animated animation cartoon comedy short featuring the voices of Jack Mercer (in the title role as Popeye), Mae Questel (as Olive Oyl), Gus Wickie (as Abu Hassan), and Lou Fleischer (as Wimpy). Note that Dave Fleischer (along with his brother Max) were legends and pioneers in animated films. They made the very first sound cartoon in 1924, beating Walt Disney by several years. They had great success with their Out of the Inkwell cartoons, Popeye, Betty Boop, and much more, including the Superman cartoons, widely regarded as the finest cartoons ever made! But after Walt Disney made Snow White, the Fleischers made Gulliver's Travels, which did not do well at the box office, and their next major project, Mr. Bug Goes To Town, had the bad fortune to be released two days before the attack on Pearl Harbor, and it also did poorly. At this same time, the Fleischer brothers had a major falling out, and in 1942, they split completely. After they made the last of their Superman cartoons in 1942, Paramount ceased control of their studio. Each of the brothers made a few more cartoons, but their careers were essentially over. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: From the 1920s on, studios would create elaborate trade ads, often in full color, and often using the finest artists of the day. They would run these ads in their studio yearbooks and exhibitor magazines, and they would also print those trade ads separately and mail them individually to theater owners, trying to get them to book that specific movie. Sometimes those books and magazines are separated and the ads, which now greatly resemble the individually printed trade ads, are sold individually. The trade ad offered here was removed from a yearbook. It can be framed and displayed (but many trade ads have different images on each side, so one must choose which side to display if it is framed!). Condition: very good.
