An Original 1949 (from the first release of this movie in France) Vintage Theatrical Folded French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 47" x 62 3/4" [119 x 159 cm]) (Learn More) Ladri di Biciclette (released in the U.S. in 1949 as "The Bicycle Thief" and in England as "Bicycle Thieves"), the classic 1948 Vittorio De Sica Italian neorealist melodrama ("Academy Award outstanding foreign language film 1949"; about a man and his son who search for a vital missing bicycle; most people rightfully consider this one of the handful of absolute finest movies ever made!) starring Lamberto Maggiorani, Enzo Staiola, Lianella Carell, Gino Saltamerenda, and Vittorio Antonucci. Note that the Italian title literally translates to "The Bicycle Thieves", but for unknown reasons, the movie became "The Bicycle Thief" when it was released in English-speaking countries! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Milo Martinet Important Added Info: Note that we have only auctioned two examples of this poster before! It has the Dutch title painted over the French title (see the Condition Description for more info). Also note this rare French poster was printed relatively soon after World War II! Virtually no French posters survive from during or right after World War II. Apparently there were many paper shortages in Europe during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all posters from before World War II, and also from during the war, and the first few years afterwards. Condition: fair to good. The poster has discoloration, creases, defects, areas of paper loss and tears of varying lengths along parts of the edges (especially at the bottom of the vertical foldline). There are some creases scattered in various areas of the poster, and there are some areas of slight discoloration. Most folds have some creases and small tears, and there is separation in some of the crossfolds. In addition, the poster was used in Dutch-speaking areas, and a Dutch title was completely painted over the original title, and it is extremely likely that the painted over area has had the paint completely bond into the poster, so that the paint CAN'T be removed, and can only be repainted over with the correct title. The poster has significant defects, and bear them in mind (and the cost of restoration, if you chose to restore it) before bidding on this very rare poster. Learn More about condition grades
