Date Sold 12/20/2022Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The Man From Planet X, the 1951 Edgar Ulmer UFO space alien science fiction (sci-fi) horror melodrama ("The Weirdest Visitor the Earth has ever seen!"; "The deadliest enemy the world has ever known!"; "Written and produced by Aubrey Wisberg and Jack Pollexfen"; about a scientist who discovers a planet is approaching the Earth, and then a spaceship lands in a remote part of Scotland, and the daughter of the scientist tries to make contact with the alien onboard!) starring Robert Clarke, Margaret Field, Raymond Bond, William Schallert, Roy Engel, and Pat Goldin (billed as "and the Strange Man from Planet X"). Note that reading the plot summary above would make you think that this movie was a rip-off of The Day the Earth Stood Still, but actually, it came out BEFORE that, and also before most of the 1950s sci-fi greats. It was shot in six days on a budget of $43,000, a tiny fraction of the budgets for "The Thing From Another World" ($1.6 million) and "The Day The Earth Stood Still" ($1.2 million), and while it lacks in special effects, it still was a groundbreaking movie! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only auctioned one example of this one-sheet in the last 6 years, and that one sold for $5,816! In all, we have auctioned seven examples of this poster, which is a far lower number than that of just about all other 1950s horror/sci-fi titles, likely because this movie was much less widely distributed! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had small paper loss at the top and bottom crossfolds and some tiny bits of surface paper loss and a few tears on parts of the folds. Its blank borders had been trimmed off, which included the studio information at the bottom. It had tears and small paper loss in the bottom credits area that remained. It had a few tears and tiny bits of paper loss scattered in non-fold areas. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. Some talented restorer replaced the missing borders and recreated the small studio credits at the bottom, and they performed restoration to the image defects (and they did not leave any excess linen around the edges). They did a pretty nice job, but you can see signs of the defects and the restoration. Also, at some point after it was backed, it received two very tiny surface chips in the background above the alien's helmet (any restorer could touch up those two spots without re-backing the poster). However, please read all of the above carefully and look at our super-sized image before bidding on this rare and desirable poster. Learn More about condition grades
