Note that this movie was filmed in 1946, but was held back so as to not interfere with the major delayed 1946 release of "The Outlaw", co-directed by Howard Hawks (although Howard Hughes took all the credit!). It was intended to be Montgomery Clift's first movie, but this delay caused it to be released after "The Search", making it his second movie. Also, Clift and Wayne had very differing political views, and did not take to each other at all, but that likely helped the movie, since their characters were at odds with each other through almost the entire movie.
