An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Destry Rides Again (released in some countries as "Arizona"), the classic 1939 George Marshall romantic cowboy western gambling poker comedy ("Based on the novel by Max Brand"; about the son of a famous sheriff who arrives in a crooked western town, with the hopes that he is like his father and will "clean up" the town, but he seems to be far from the man for the job, because he has Eastern ways, but he soon proves the naysayers wrong) starring Marlene Dietrich (as Frenchy), James Stewart (Jimmy Stewart; in the title role as Tom Destry Jr.), Charles Winninger, Mischa Auer, Brian Donlevy, Irene Hervey, Una Merkel, Allen Jenkins, Warren Hymer, Billy Gilbert, Lillian Yarbo, and Jack Carson. Note that the title of the movie refers to Stewart's character returning to the town where his father had been sheriff, but it is not a sequel of any sort. Oddly, when the movie was re-made with Audie Murphy in the lead role, the title was shortened to simply "Destry", which means that "Destry Rides Again" came before "Destry"! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that the first release one-sheets from this classic James Stewart/Marlene Dietrich western have always been incredibly rare! Likely this is because the movie was quickly re-released in 1947 and 1950, and that would have used up whatever original paper remained at that time. We have only once before previously auctioned this style one-sheet in all our years of auctioning (and that was 25 years ago), and we have never auctioned the other style! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. It appears that the poster was heavily stained throughout, with a 10" vertical tear going down the left of Stewart's face, just to the right of his eye and exiting in his cheek to above his shoulder. There were tears, smudges, and stains scattered throughout the rest of the poster and the borders were tattered. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to linenbacking. Some talented restorer did a really nice job under the circumstances, making the poster display well, and it looks pretty good from a reasonable viewing distance, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects when you look at the poster close up.
