An Original Vintage Theatrical Kraftbacked Folded German Movie Poster (measures 37 1/4" x 54" [95 x 137 cm]) (Learn More) Ritt in die Freiheit (released in the U.S as "Ride to Freedom"), the 1937 Karl Hartl German World War I (WWI) romantic melodrama (the movie is on the conditional list because it has strong anti-Polish and anti-Russian elements) starring Willy Birgel, Viktor Staal, Hansi Knoteck, Ursula Grabley, and Edwin Jurgensen. Note that this is a "conditional" movie. This refers to around 40 movies that were made in Germany between 1933 and 1945, during the time the Nazis were in power in Germany. These movies are considered to be propaganda movies, which glorify the Nazi regime and their ideals. Immediately after World War II, a list of over 100 movies that were made between 1933 and 1945 was created, and those movies were not allowed to be shown at any time in Germany or Austria. Over the next decade, around 60 of those movies were taken off the list so that they are allowed to be shown (but rarely are), and those movies are known as "forbidden movies", because even though they can now be shown, they could not be shown at all in the years right after World War II. The remaining 40 or so movies (including this one) are known as "conditional" movies, because they are still not allowed to be shown in Germany or Austria, even in the present day, with the sole exception being when they are shown in an educational context, like at a university, and a speaker talks before and after the movie. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Kurt Geffers Important Added Info: Note that German movie paper from this film is incredibly rare. We have only auctioned a few German programs for this movie but no German posters until we were consigned this poster (which is a "country of origin" poster for this German movie!). "Pre-War" movie posters from Germany are virtually nonexistent (it seems likely that most were destroyed during the huge paper shortages that occurred during World War II). As is typical of pre-World War II German posters, the poster has a seal in the printing near one corner which gives the date of "23 Sep 1936" (but it would not be released until 1937). Also note that this poster has been kraftbacked, which means it was backed onto a brown paper soon after it was printed (this process is called "kraft-backing", and posters with it are called "kraft-backed"). One could have it professionally removed from the kraft paper and linenbacked, and it would display well. Condition: poor to fair. The poster was kraftbacked (see above). Someone likely used this poster to create a billboard image, because they put a grid of lines over the entire poster. This was sometimes done so that they could divide the actual billboard into sections and then paint each portion of the billboard to match the corresponding square or triangle eon the grid. Please bear this significant defects (and the kraftbacking) in mind before bidding on this incredibly rare poster. Learn More about condition grades
