A Vintage Hardcover Book (measures 5 1/4" x 7 3/4" [13 x 20 cm]; 247 pages) (Learn More)

Rogue Song, the 1930 Lionel Barrymore romantic musical ("All Talking"; "Based on the operetta 'Gypsy Love' by Franz Lehar") starring Lawrence Tibett (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; billed as "Lawrence Tibbett of the Metropolitan Opera House in The Rogue Song"), Catherine Dale Owen, Nance O'Neil, Judith Vosselli Ulrich Haupt, and Stan Laurel & Oliver Hardy (Laurel and Hardy). Note that famous actor Lionel Barrymore directed six movies between 1913 and 1917, but then solely acted until 1929, when he directed another nine movies between then and 1931. Also note that, to increase box office appeal, minor scenes with Laurel & Hardy were interspersed throughout the movie prior to its release, but the movie is probably best remembered for its scene where star Lawrence Tibbett sings an operatic song while he is tied to two posts and being whipped! MGM's fears about the public not responding well to an "opera" movie were unfounded, because this was the 7th highest grossing movie of 1930! Note that Lawrence Tibbett was a singer during the 1930s (but best remembered from the Metropolitan Opera), who appeared in several movies as, naturally, an opera singer. He was the first to play the leading role in many famous operas, including the role of Brutus Jones, in The Emperor Jones (which he played in blackface)! Darryl F. Zanuck signed him to a multi-picture contract, sure he would be a major star, but alas, he was not, and he only appeared in a few movies. Later, he had throat problems, which led to a drinking problem (or perhaps vice versa), and his later years were unhappy. Also, note that this is a "lost" film which means that no complete surviving copies are thought to exist (only a trailer, soundtrack, and a short scene survive).

Important Added Info: Note that this is the A.L. Burt Company photoplay edition in its original dust jacket (one of a collection of such books we are auctioning in this set of auctions). Here are some more details about these books: A.L. Burt (like Grosset & Dunlap) was a publisher that made a deal with some studios to publish "movie edition" hardcovers of novels that were currently adapted into movies. They would republish the original novel as the movie came out (or soon after), and they would put a dust jacket on the book that showed the stars of the movie, and they would include several pages of images from the movie scattered in the book. These books were incredibly popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. Because we know that the dust jacket is an important part of the value of this book, we also pictured the entire dust jacket opened up. Between that image and our other images, you should be able to get a good sense of the overall condition of this book.
