An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) The Wizard of Oz, the classic 1939 Victor Fleming family magical fantasy adventure musical ("MGM's miracle musical show of shows!"; "It's Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's Technicolor triumph!"; "Magnificent in its brilliant Technicolor splendor!"; "At Last It's Here Biggest Sensation Since "Snow White"!"; "The mighty miracle show that is the talk of America!"; "Amazing sights to see! The Tornado, Munchkinland, Horse of a Different Color, Startling Balloon Ascent, The Flying Monkeys, The Tree That Throws Apples"; "Gaiety! Glory! Glamour!"; based on the classic book of the same name by L. Frank Baum; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award) starring Judy Garland (as Dorothy), Frank Morgan (in the title role as The Wizard of Oz!), Ray Bolger (as The Scarecrow), Bert Lahr (as The Cowardly Lion), Jack Haley (as The Tin Man), Billie Burke (as Glinda, the Good Witch), Margaret Hamilton (as the Wicked Witch), Charley Grapewin, "The Munchkins", and Toto too! Note that MGM was worried about how well this movie would do at the box office, and they did something we don't remember seeing on any other major movie advertising! One of the taglines says "Biggest sensation since Snow White", which means MGM was advertising a Walt Disney movie, but that shows just how worried they were! Of course, they needn't have worried, because this was a timeless classic that has only improved with age. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that in recent years, we have been consigned relatively few 1939 lobby cards from this classic movie. We have only auctioned two different examples of this "certificate of death" card in the last 16 years. Note that original 1939 Wizard of Oz lobby cards were printed with a red color in the border background area and in the bottom studio credit that fades extremely easily. A high percentage of the cards that exist have either a pink color in those areas, and other cards have orange in those areas. This card has red that has slightly changed to a pink color, but not nearly as much as some cards we have seen (the cards with bright red are extremely rare). Condition: good to very good. The card has many tiny pinholes and smudges, with some stains around the edges. The vast majority of them are in the blank borders. There is a lesser number of pinholes in the left and right blank borders, with two 1/2" tears in the lower left blank border. There is a tiny pinhole in the lower part of the certificate of death and one in the dark area to the right of the mayor. There are a few faint smudges in the letters of the title and very minor surface paper loss on the back of the left of the bottom blank border. As noted above, the reds in the card have turned to a pink color, but there are many cards where this has happened, and many others where the red has changed to a much lighter pink or an orange color. Since the majority of the defects in this card are in the blank borders, I would think that most collectors could happily display it as it is, or certainly, restoration could be performed (and the card has never had any). Either way, the new owner will have a great card to display on their wall! Learn More about condition grades
