"Linenbacking" is a process that is used to preserve movie posters (the best restorers de-acidify the poster during the restoration process), and to make them far easier to display (it is much easier and less expensive to frame a linenbacked poster). When linenbacking is done correctly, it adds to the value of the poster, and is NOT a defect! Note that the specific poster in this auction was well linenbacked, but the restorer did not attempt to make the poster look "perfect". You may still see some slight evidence of the restoration and/or the defects when you look at the poster from inches away, and you may be able to see slight signs of restoration even from a distance. But the poster now looks quite nice, and I think most collectors would be quite happy to display this poster on their wall. In general, know that we received many of the linenbacked posters we are currently selling already linenbacked, but we have examined every poster EXTREMELY carefully, and we did our best to describe what condition the poster was in PRIOR to restoration, the defects the poster had PRIOR to restoration (in the "Pre-Restoration Defects & Quality of Restoration" section), any unrestored defects, and, when it seemed worth noting, something about the quality of the restoration itself. Many other auction houses claim to match what we do in this area, but EVERY person who regularly buys movie posters from major auctions can tell you this is just not the case! We never intentionally overgrade a single item, we never "accidentally" miss defects, and we never enhance a single image! Condition: very good. The poster had water staining, tears, and uneven areas of paper loss across the top 1" to 2" of the poster. It mostly affected the blank white border, and very slightly extended into the very top edge of the image, but there was truly very slight paper loss and tears within the image. Other than that defect, the poster was in really excellent condition prior to linenbacking (apparently it was never used and was stored rolled, and that end of the poster became wet, which caused the staining, tears, and paper loss, but it is limited to the top 1" to 2" of the poster, as described above). The poster was really expertly backed, using an undamaged example of the poster to re-create the extremely tiny areas of missing image at the very top of the image. I think most collectors would not realize the poster had had this restoration unless it was pointed out to them, and it will certainly display wonderfully on anyone's wall!
