An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Believe It or Not, the 1931 Vitaphone stock poster ("A new amazing Believe It or Not"; "The most interesting man in the world"; "The Horned Man"; "The Child Cyclops"; "The Boy Who Died of Old Age Before He Was Seven Years Old") used by theaters showing one of the Believe It or Not documentary shorts featuring Robert L. Ripley. Ripley's Believe It or Not is a legendary American franchise which deals in bizarre events and items so strange and unusual that readers might question the claims. Created by Robert Ripley in 1919, it was originally a newspaper panel and was later adapted into a wide variety of formats, including radio, television, comic books, a chain of museums and a book series, and there are still Believe It or Not museums in the present day! This film series of 24 theatrical shorts were released between 1930 and 1932, but it appears that the studio only created a single one-sheet for use when showing any of the shorts, but fortunately, it is a wonderful poster with full art, and it does not have a blank area that so many similar stock posters have! If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have previously auctioned four examples of this poster, and only one in the last 19 years. That last example has now been reconsigned to us, so this is still only one of four examples we have ever auctioned! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had small tears, stains, and small areas of paper loss scattered above and to the left of the bottom crossfold, slightly affecting the right of the tagline about the boy, and extending up into the white background of that box and the white background to the right of that box. There was a small bit of paper loss in the vertical fold in the center of Ripley's hand, and in the bottom of the green background at center, along the vertical fold. There were a few other small areas of paper loss scattered in the vertical fold, and a much lesser amount of wear on the horizontal folds. There were a few small tears and stains in the blank borders. There was tiny paper loss in Ripley's forehead and in his cheek. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. A talented restorer did an expert job repairing the above defects, and this rare poster displays really well!
