The Orient Steam Navigation Company (better known as the Orient Line) was a British shipping company with roots going back to the late 18th century. From the early 20th century onwards, an association began with P&O which became 51% shareholder in 1919 and culminated in the Orient Line being totally absorbed into that company in 1966.
Artist: John Rowland Barker
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this poster! Also note that this poster mentions the Orcades and Orion cruise ships. The Orcades was built in 1906 as the German ship SS Prinz Ludwig, and sold to the Orient Line in 1921 (as part of World War I war reparations) when she was refitted and renamed to Orcades, and continued to sail for the Orient Line until 1925. The Orion was built in 1935, was used as a troop transport during World War II (WWII), and then continued to sail for The Orient Line until her retirement in 1963.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster was never folded. It had a large irregular area of staining and surface paper loss in the top left blank background area, perhaps where a snipe was once attached. Otherwise, the poster was in pretty nice condition prior to linenbacking, with just a few border tears, creases, and smudges. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
