An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked "Long" Australian Daybill Movie Poster (measures 15" x 40") (Learn More) Charlie Chan at the Opera, the 1936 H. Bruce Humberstone detective mystery crime thriller ("Warner Oland vs. Boris Karloff"; "Based on the character 'Charlie Chan' created by Earl Derr Biggers"; in a plot that heavily borrows from "The Phantom of the Opera", Karloff is an escapee from an insane asylum who had lost his memory, but now does remember, and hides in an opera house, determined to get revenge on those who tried to murder him 13 years earlier) starring Warner Oland (in the title role as Charlie Chan), Boris Karloff, Keye Luke (as Lee Chan), Charlotte Henry, Thomas Beck, Margaret Irving, and William Demarest. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! The poster had a 5" slightly semi-circular tear near the middle of the right border extending through the middle of the faces of the man and woman at lower right. There were two thin strips of paper loss (one 1" and one 1/2" long) in the area between Karloff and Oland. There were three thin strips of paper loss left border to the left of Oland's neck. There was a handwritten "SAT. MAY 7th" written in the top of the top blank white area. There are a couple of dot stains in the "O" of "OPERA" in the title. Other than the above basically minor defects, the poster was in pretty nice condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was well backed, and the restorer chose to paint over the handwritten play date at the top. The poster looks quite nice, and the slight restoration is not at all noticeable.
