An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 28 1/2" x 41 1/4" [72 x 105 cm]) (Learn More)

Ambassador Bill, the 1931 Sam Taylor romantic political comedy (about the American ambassador to a small mythical European country who befriends the young heir to the throne, and he needs to help keep the boy alive!) starring Will Rogers (in the title role as Bill Harper), Greta Nissen, Marguerite Churchill, Gustav von Seyffertitz, Ray Milland, and Tad Alexander. Note that Tad Alexander, who co-stars in this movie, as the young King Paul of an unnamed foreign country, was making his film debut at the age of 9. He made nine more movies over the next three years, but then, he grew quite a bit, and could not play pre-teen roles! He trained himself to play the piano, and gave concerts! He left show business to join the military in World War II, and never returned to show business, passing away in 2012 in the age of 90.

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that this movie, like most of Will Rogers' Fox movies from the 1930s, was re-released in 1935 and 1936 by 20th Century-Fox, shortly after Rogers' tragic death in a plane crash. Perhaps this explains why first release 1931 movie paper from this film is incredibly scarce. Prior to being consigned a one-sheet in 2017, we had only auctioned a first release window card, and no other 1931 U.S. posters or lobby cards. That one-sheet from 2017 has now been reconsigned to us, so it is still the only example of this poster we have ever auctioned! Also note that this one-sheet measures 28 1/2" x 41 1/4" [72 x 105 cm].

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had two evenly spaced vertical folds instead of the usual one. It had small paper loss at some crossfolds and some small tears and tiny paper loss on parts of some folds. It had paper loss at the right end of the bottom horizontal fold that was around 1" x 3" and extended into the green and solid black border areas. There were some other tears and small areas of paper loss in the borders. There was a piece of tape on the back of the left of the image (on the back of the yellow under the "B" of "BILL" and slightly extending into the girl's head), and that tape was removed, causing surface paper loss on the back of the poster in that area, but it has almost no effect on the front. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
