Date Sold 7/2/2024Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) The Wise Guy, the 1926 Frank Lloyd silent carnival patent medicine con man religious romantic love triangle melodrama ("He thought he was wise!"; about a carnival man who sells patent medicine and he becomes an evangelist, making even more money that way; his assistant is a girl who helps him, but then she discovers religion for real!) starring Mary Astor, James Kirkwood, Betty Compson, George F. Marion, Mary Carr, and George Cooper. Note that there is a great oddity to the movie paper for this movie. We have seen a herald and an image of the title card, and on both of those, Mary Astor is clearly top-billed, but she is not pictured on the title card, and it doesn't seem like she had the female lead in the movie! Perhaps this was because she was a "bigger star". Also note that the female character in this movie is obviously based on Aimee Semple McPherson, the famous real life evangelist. The year after this movie was made, Sinclair Lewis published "Elmer Gantry", with a remarkably similar plot to this movie. Finally, note that the movie required much censorship due to its treatment of some religious people as insincere, and apparently, the final version had been so cut up that little of the original plot remained! Also note that Mary Carr became a major star in the mid 1910s around the age of 40, playing the parts of saintly mothers. She continued to make movies (switching to grandmother roles) through the mid 1930s, and then continued with mostly uncredited parts until the mid 1950s. She passed away in 1973 at the age of 99! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that ANY movie paper items from this movie are incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned a single herald from this movie (and NO other movie paper) until we received this lobby card! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Condition: very good to fine. Note that this card is completely unrestored and there is not a single piece of tape on either the front or back! Learn More about condition grades
