Date Sold 3/6/2018Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Autographed 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Spook Show Still (Learn More) Dr. Dracula's Living Nightmare Show, the 1950s campy stage horror show ("First time here... you dare not look into his eyes!"; "On stage! In Person!"; "Beauties at the mercy of inhuman monsters"; "In the audience"; "All new and never dared before!"; "Alive!"; "In person"; "Watch out when the lights go out!"; "Super scary!"; "See Dazzling Donna Haynes 6Ft. 4ins. of 'Hex-appeal' plus on screen Super Horror Thriller"; "First time here... do not judge by anything seen before!") featuring art of monsters and spooks. This item was promoting a 1940s & 1950s traveling stage show that appeared in movie theaters before the "giant horror show on our screen". "Spook shows" started in the 1930s, and continued into the late 1960s (with their greatest prominence in the late 1940s and 1950s). Local theaters would book three to five low budget movies, and then advertise them as a late night "spook show". Often they would have "live" acts on stage (sometimes famous actors who had appeared in monster movies would appear on stage in full make up, and sometimes it would be local actors dressed as monsters), and often the posters would make outrageous promises (sometimes they might say a person would be beheaded on stage, etc!). Note that a knowledgeable collector points out that this spook show was created by a magician and stage performer named Card Mondor, who toured all over the world (along with his wife Donna Haynes). Near the end of his spook show career he was based on Australia, where he also owned a magic shop and was involved in Australian TV and film distribution (which may explain how art from posters for this show ended up on teaser posters for the 1963 film Dementia 13). Important Added Info: Note that this still, which has been personally autographed (signed) by Dr. Dracula, is fascinating on several accounts! First off, it is signed by "Dr. Dracula", who, we believe was Card Mondor (see above), but it seems reasonable that he would sign the still this way. What is even more interesting is that the only items we have ever seen from this spook show are Australian posters (which have surfaced in some quantity) and several Benton window cards, which seem likely to have been created after the shows first played in the 1950s. But THIS still has "Direct from Hollywood Dr. Dracula's 'DEN OF LIVING NIGHTMARES' America's Foremost Horror Show!!" stamped on the back, which would surely indicate that this still was for a performance of this show that occurred within the U.S., but after it played in Hollywood. This is the only "first release" U.S. item for this spook show we have ever auctioned. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Our consignor is a longtime dealer who acquired this signed item among many other purchases in his inventory, and he does not have a certificate of authenticity, but we believe the signature to likely be authentic. Condition: good to very good. Someone lightly tri-folded the still and there are staple holes in the corners. Learn More about condition grades
