Mephisto, the 1981 (released in the U.S. in 1982) Istvan Szabo German/Hungarian/Austrian World War II (WWII)-era Nazi stage acting melodrama ("From the novel by Klaus Mann"; about an actor whose popularity soars during the Nazi rise to power early in WWII; loosely based on the life of Gustaf Grundgens; author Mann was his brother-in-law at one time!; winner of the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film) starring Klaus Maria Brandauer, Ildiko Bansagi, Krystyna Janda, Rolf Hoppe, Gyorgy Cserhalmi, Peter Andorai, Karin Boyd, and Christine Harbort
