A German Art Print (measures 19 3/4" x 27 3/4" [50 x 70 cm]) (Learn More) Aubrey Beardsley was an English illustrator and author from the 1890s. His drawings, influenced by the style of Japanese woodcuts, emphasized the grotesque, the decadent, and the erotic. He was a leading figure in the Aesthetic movement, which also included Oscar Wilde and James A. McNeill Whistler. Beardsley's contribution to the development of the Art Nouveau and poster styles was significant, despite the brevity of his career before his early death from tuberculosis, in 1898 at the age of 25. His work was "rediscovered" in the early 1960s, and he influenced the early "underground" cartoonists, and art prints of his work were sold in large numbers in the 1960s and 1970s.
