2h0251 AMBLIN' signed 1sh R1971 by cinematographer Allen Daviau, Steven Spielberg's first movie!

A 1971 Re-Release Theatrical Folded Autographed One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More)

Amblin', the 1968 Steven Spielberg romantic hitchhiking travel adventure short ("He and she were thumb-trippin'."; "They had the makin's... and the tail-end of summer"; about a man and woman who are hitchhiking and who meet and become friends, and the movie has no dialog) starring Pamela McMyler, and Richard Levin. Note that the posters for this movie have "Denis C. Hoffman's Amblin'" printed in the lower right, and Hoffman was the producers of this short.

Note that this was Steven Spielberg's very first movie, and he wrote it in addition to directing it. It briefly played at the Loews Crest Theater in Los Angeles in December 1968, where it was on a double bill with Skidoo, and we don't know if any posters were created for that initial showing (either individual or as a double bill). It was the winner of the Silver Phoenix Best Short Subject Award at the Atlanta Film Festival in 1969, and again, we don't know what posters, if any, were used to advertise that film festival showing. We have auctioned a single black and white one-sheet that predates the 1971 NSS re-release one-sheet, and feel certain that poster is from exactly 1970, because the R rating on the poster says "under 17 requires accompanying Parent or Adult Guardian", and in 1968 and 1969, the R rating age was 16, and it was raised in 1970, and therefore we feel that poster was specifically created in 1970, because there was a color one-sheet created in 1971, when the movie was re-released and distributed through NSS. Of course, Spielberg had great affection for this, his first movie, and he named his production company "Amblin" after this movie!

Important Added Info: Note that this poster has been personally autographed (signed) by cinematographer Allen Daviau! It includes a JSA "certificate of authenticity" from James Spence Authentication, LLC (see our images). This poster was originally consigned to us in our June 2020 auction and it sold for $396! Our consignor was a college professor for a number of years, who was a close friend of Ray Harryhausen, and who became friendly with many Hollywood directors, actors, and crew members. He had a collection of movie posters in the 1970s, and when he would have a chance to meet an actor, director, or crew member, he would find one-sheets in his collection from movies that person had worked on, and he would bring it to their meeting, and ask the person to sign (and on several occasions, he was able to get more than one signature on a single poster), and some of the people who signed wrote an inscription, sometimes personalized to our consignor. He has passed away, but we are 100% certain the signature on this poster is authentic, because it was acquired in person. Now that very same poster has been reconsigned to us for this auction!

Note also that most posters from the 1970s are relatively easy to acquire, but not this 1971 re-release poster (see our description above for much more about it)! Why? We wonder if it didn't get very limited distribution, even in 1971 (especially because it was a short), and we wonder if theaters that showed it even bothered to order the poster. As noted above, we have only once auctioned a one-sheet that may be a first release 1968 poster for this short, and those who collect on Steven Spielberg movies all want a poster from this, and the only option other than that single one-sheet we auctioned is this 1971 re-release one-sheet. While we have auctioned a total of nine examples of this poster over the past 32 years, that is a far lower number than the vast majority of 1971 titles we auction, making it much more rare!

As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. On non-signed items, we give a "lifetime guarantee" on everything we auction, but on signed items, we give the above modified guarantee of 30 days after the auction closes.

Condition: good. The poster had separation at each crossfold and some tears in the top quarter of the vertical fold, with some separation and tears in parts of the borders. Someone many years ago put pieces of tape on the back of these tears and separation, and that tape has bled through to the front (as seen in our super-sized image). Any talented restorer can certainly remove the tape and perform restoration on the bleed-through, and afterwards, the poster will display well, but bear this in mind before bidding on this poster.
