An Original Vintage Folded French Large Political Poster (31x47; measures 31 1/4" x 46 3/4" [79 x 119 cm]) (Learn More)

Le Marechal a Dit, Le Marechal a Fait (literally translates to "The Marshal Said, the Marshal Did"), the circa 1945 French political poster featuring a list of statements made by Phillippe Petain, the Marshal of France versus actions taken by him during the time France was occupied by Nazi Germany. Marshal Petain had been a French World War I hero, who, as France was surrendering to Germany in 1940, was appointed Prime Minster of France (he was 84 at that time), and the government was moved to Vichy. He is often compared to Quisling of Norway, who also collaborated with the Nazis. When France was liberated in 1945, Marshal Petain was charged with treason and stood trial, and this poster was created at that time. He was convicted on all charges, but because he had been a major war hero, and because of his advanced age, he was given life in prison instead of the death penalty, and he died in 1951.
