Date Sold 6/8/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Unfolded French World War I Poster (measures 31 3/4" x 47" [81 x 119 cm]) (Learn More) On Ne Passe Pas. 1914... 1918 (literally translates to "They Shall Not Pass 1914... 1918"), the 1918 French World War I (WWI) poster (with a tagline that translates to "Twice I have held and conquered on the Marne. My civilian brother, the sneaky offensive of "white peace" will attack you in your turn. Like me, you must hold and conquer, be strong and clever. Beware of Kraut hypocrisy") created by the Union of the Great French Associations Against Enemy Propaganda. This poster features Maurice Neumont art of a ragged but victorious soldier standing on a battlefield and wearing gas mask around his neck. Note that the Marne is a French river and the site of important French victories near the start and end of the war. The "white peace" refers to a proposal which would have theoretically ended the war with all nations returning to their pre-war status without further repercussions. Artist: Maurice Neumont Important Added Info: Note that we previously auctioned different examples of this poster. Some measured measured smaller than this one, and some measured the same as this, and one measured a larger 34" x 48". They are definitely from different printings of the poster, because the artwork is placed slightly differently on the various posters, and it would make sense that they had a limited amount of paper in 1918 in France, and that they would have needed to do more printings. We don't know if one version predates the other, and we don't know that any collectors care. Note that we were just consigned a wonderful collection of 59 war posters, most from World War II (which we are auctioning in 59 separate auctions)! Included in this collection are some posters we have never auctioned before, and some we have only auctioned once or twice before (sometimes only many years ago). This is a wonderful opportunity to obtain some or all of these historic posters, many of which have great images!). Condition: good to very good. The poster has a few creases, defects, areas of paper loss and tears of varying lengths along parts of some edges (including one large tear at lower center - see our image). It is otherwise in generally nice condition especially given its age. Learn More about condition grades
