Mahatma Gandhi (born Mohandas Karamachand Gandhi) was an Indian activist and leader from the 1890s to 1948. Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. He was assassinated on January 30th, 1948 by a Hindu nationalist, at the age of 78. Ben Kingsley portrayed Gandhi in Richard Attenborough's 1982 film Gandhi, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
