A 1949 Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Stock One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41") (Learn More) one of three 1940s stock poster created by Republic Pictures for use by theaters showing re-releases of Roy Rogers cowboy western movies. He was incredibly popular in the 1940s, and they issued one poster in 1940, which has him on a rearing horse, another in 1941 that has a smiling image of Roy in the lower left, and one in 1948 (which continued to be used into 1949) that has him in the upper right (the first two we were able to date from their litho numbers, and the third one has a 1948 or 1949 NSS number). Theaters would order these posters which had a large blank area. Sometimes the studio would overprint the stock poster with the title of a specific movie, and sometimes they were sent a series of large paper snipes with the titles of specific entries of the series, so the theater could paste in each snipe as needed, thus getting many posters for the price of one. Sometimes stock posters are found with blank snipe areas. Most collectors consider them more valuable with a printed snipe attached, or with an overprinted snipe area. "Linenbacking" is a process that is used to preserve movie posters (the best restorers de-acidify the poster during the restoration process), and to make them far easier to display (it is much easier and less expensive to frame a linenbacked poster). When linenbacking is done correctly, it adds to the value of the poster, and is NOT a defect! Note that the specific poster in this auction either was NOT linenbacked very well, OR the poster had more significant defects (you can tell which type it is by reading our written comments about the poster's condition). In general, know that we received many of the linenbacked posters we are currently selling already linenbacked, but we have examined every poster EXTREMELY carefully, and we did our best to describe what condition the poster was in PRIOR to restoration, the defects the poster had PRIOR to restoration (in the "Pre-Restoration Defects & Quality of Restoration" section), any unrestored defects, and, when it seemed worth noting, something about the quality of the restoration itself. Many other auction houses claim to match what we do in this area, but EVERY person who regularly buys movie posters from major auctions can tell you this is just not the case! We never intentionally overgrade a single item, we never "accidentally" miss defects, and we never enhance a single image! Condition: good. This poster has been linenbacked, but it was not very well done, either because the restorer did not do a very good job, or because the years since it has been linenbacked have not been kind to the poster. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. Generally, it had its top border completely trimmed off, pinholes, stains, and tears around the edges, and creases, tears, and paper loss on parts of several foldlines, with smudges in the yellow background areas. The poster was not that well backed, because you can see signs of the above general defects and the restoration of the defects (in some cases, as should be immediately evident in our image, the linenbacker did no restoration to some of the defects). I would think few collectors would want to display it as it is, without someone performing some additional restoration. Certainly, a talented restorer could perform additional restoration (either with or without re-backing the poster), but it might be fairly expensive to have this done, so bear that in mind before you place a bid.
