A 1951 Re-Release Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (Spanish/US 1sh; printed in the U.S. for use with Spanish speaking audiences; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) The Secret of a Treasure Island, the 1938 Elmer Clifton swashbuckler pirate action adventure science fiction (sci-fi) crime thriller serial ("Amazing adventure in a volcano's ominous shadow!"; "Story by L. Ron Hubbard") starring Don Terry, Gwen Gaze, Grant Withers, Hobart Bosworth, and William Farnum. This is a really remarkable serial, for an odd reason! As noted on the advertising, the story was written by L. Ron Hubbard. He had started writing for pulp magazines in 1934, and he had published a full-length novel, "Buckskin Brigades", in 1937. Following that, he went to Hollywood, and it is known for certain that he wrote the story that this serial was based on. The Church of Scientology claims that he wrote many other serials at this time, and the screenplays for feature films in the following years, but they are the only ones who believe this, and no substantiation can be found for it (and of course, they have a reason to make his pre-Scientology career seem as good as possible). But based on what is actually known, this is the ONLY movie that L. Ron Hubbard wrote! First release movie paper from it is incredibly rare. We have auctioned a single still from it (which did not mention Hubbard), a title card for chapter 7 and a 1951 re-release Spanish/US one-sheet (both credited Hubbard)! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: As noted above, this poster is from the only movie that actually credits L. Ron Hubbard on the poster! Also note that this one-sheet was printed in the United States for use at theaters with Spanish speaking audiences (this was done most by MGM, starting in the 1930s, but it was done by the other major studios as well, and often the posters would have the exact same image as the English language poster, except the writing would be in Spanish, and on posters from the 1930s and 1940s there would be an added "Toda en Espanol!", meaning "Entirely in Spanish!", printed within the image). Sometimes posters from the 1960s or later will have the word "SPANISH" printed in the bottom border (or sometimes stamped on the back of the poster).
UPDATED 12/21/2020: Note that this poster is from a 1951 re-release and not the 1938 1st release as we originally mentioned. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had small paper loss at the top crossfold and tiny tears and tiny bits of paper loss in parts of the folds, with pinholes, tears, and paper loss around the edges and some small stains scattered throughout. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can clearly see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
