Original Vintage Theatrical Spanish Movie Poster (measures 27" x 39") (Learn More)

El Codigo Penal (literally translates to "The Criminal Code"), the 1931 Phil Rosen & Julio Villarreal crime thriller (based on the play "The Criminal Code" by Martin Flavin) starring Barry Norton, Maria Alba, Carlos Villarias, Manuel Arbo, Max Baron, and Maria Calvo. This was a Spanish version of "The Criminal Code", made by Columbia in 1931 and directed by Howard Hawks. Universal did the same thing with "Dracula" in 1931. They filmed the movie twice, once in English, and once in Spanish, with two entirely different casts, U.S. actors for the English version and mostly Latin actors for the Spanish version, obviously for release in Spanish speaking countries, and the same was done with this movie, except there were three versions (the English language version starred Walter Huston and Constance Cummings, and the French version starred Harry Baur). Boris Karloff appeared in the American version, but alas, he did not appear in either the Spanish or French versions. A knowledgeable collector tells us that this was the first of only 3 films that Columbia made using this process. The other two were "The Good Bad Girl" (El Pasado Acusa) and "Ten Cents A Dance" (Carne de Cabaret). It appears this movie was never released in the U.S. If anyone knows more about this movie, please e-mail us and we will post it here.
