An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 47" x 62 3/4" [119 x 159 cm]) (Learn More) Claudine A L'ecole (literally translates to "Claudine at School"), the 1937 Serge de Poligny French lesbian homosexual boarding school coming-of-age melodrama (based on the novel by Colette; about a teen girl at a boarding school who is in love with her young teacher, but is disappointed when the teacher shows interest in the physician, one of the only males to appear in the movie) starring Max Dearly, Pierre Brasseur, Suzet Mais, Blanchette Brunoy (in the title role as Claudine ), Jeanne Fusier-Gir, Marcel Mouloudji (billed as "Le Petit Mouloudji"), and Margo Lion. It appears this movie was never released in the U.S. Note that the source novel was written by Colette, who was bisexual, and it had a strong lesbian plot. But not surprisingly, that had to be diminished in the movie, so the potential romance between the female student and her female teacher was more implied than realized, although the movie did have some pretty daring scenes for the time, including a nude swimming scene! Artist: Marino Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare French poster from during World War II, which we have never auctioned before! Virtually no French posters survive from during or right after World War II (mostly only some heavy stock lobby cards, and even those are rare). Apparently there were many paper shortages in France during World War II, resulting in the destruction of almost all posters from before World War II, and also from during the war, and the first few years afterwards! Also note that this is a "country of origin" poster for this French movie! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had some darkening on the folds and in the borders. It had a 3" tear in the upper right border. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Learn More about condition grades
