An Original Vintage Linenbacked Spanish [War] Poster (measures 27 3/4" x 39 1/4" [70 x 100 cm]) (Learn More) Criminals, the circa 1938 Spanish civil war poster created by POUM to condemn the actions of the Nationalists and promote the humanitarian services of the International Red Aid (Socors Roig). This poster features grim artwork of a woman holding a bleeding child as a bomb drops in the background. Partido Obrero de Unificacion Marxista (POUM) was a Spanish communist party founded in 1935. Initially part of the Popular Front, its leaders left that organization when POUM's more radical proposals were not accepted. The party was particularly strong in Catalonia and the number of supporters grew rapidly during the Spanish Civil War. George Orwell, who fought alongside the POUM in the civil war, reports that its membership was roughly 10,000 in July 1936, 70,000 in December 1936, and 40,000 in June 1937, although he notes that the numbers are from POUM sources and are probably exaggerated. International Red Aid was an international social service organization established by the Communist International. The organization was founded in 1922 to function as an "international political Red Cross", providing material and moral aid to radical "class war" political prisoners around the world. The International Red Aid made its first appearance in Spain as a charity organization during the workers' revolt of October of 1934. It provided aid to those imprisoned for their role in the rebellion, and organized amnesty campaigns for prisoners that were to be executed. The organization, which included many artists and writers, was later re-formed and expanded in Barcelona in January of 1936, with the aim of opposing fascism on multiple fronts. Note that the art on this poster could be referencing two events: The Bombing of Barcelona (a series of Nationalist airstrikes which took place in March of 1938, in which up to 1300 people were killed and at least 2000 wounded) or the Bombing of Guernica (an aerial bombing of the Basque town which was carried out by Nazi Germany and Italy, who were allies of Francisco Franco's Nationalist faction). These bombings gained immediate international media attention because of the intentional targeting of civilians by aerial bombers. Pablo Picasso created a painting based on the Bombing of Guernica. It is one of Picasso's best known works, and is regarded by many art critics as one of the most moving and powerful anti-war paintings in history. It was originally displayed in Spain's Pavilion during the 1937 World's Fair and currently is displayed at the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had tiny paper loss on parts of some folds. It had some tiny paper loss in the center. It had a 6" near the middle of the right border, extending into the white background. It had darkening, pinholes, tears, and tiny paper loss around the edges, with some faint brown staining scattered in the poster, with water stains in the lower left that extend into the child's head. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. While the poster could be displayed as it is, it would also certainly make sense to have it removed from the old linen and re-backed, but that will be the decision for the new owner of this very striking poster.
