He was a judge in Alabama known as "Alabama's Fighting Judge", and in 1963, he was elected the 45th governor of Alabama and served two non-consecutive terms and two consecutive terms and ran for President in 1968. He is probably most known for his Southern populist and segregationist attitudes during the desegregation period and for surviving a 1972 assassination attempt which left him paralyzed and in a wheelchair for the remainder of his life.
