An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 45 3/4" x 62 1/2" [116 x 159 cm]) (Learn More)

Hans le marin (released in the U.S. in 1950 as "The Wicked City"), the 1949 Francois Villiers French romantic crime film noir ("Actually Filmed In The Old Port of Marseilles... Where Pleasures and Secrets Are Bought For A Great Price!"; "He picked up a load of trouble...when he stopped to give her a light!"; "Every street in Marseilles... led to her door way!"; "A light means the same thing in every port!"; "From the Novel by Edouard Peisson"; dialogue by Jean-Pierre Aumont; about a Canadian sailor who meets a beautiful prostitute on leave, and he thinks she is in love with him, and he spends the rest of the movie, with many trials and tribulations, trying to find her, and when he finally does, she says he means nothing to her, and that she doesn't even remember his name, which was exactly the wrong thing to say!) starring Maria Montez, Jean-Pierre Aumont, Lilli Palmer, Marcel Dalio, Pierre Bertin, Gregoire Aslan (billed as "Coco Aslan"), Roger Blin, Georges Hubert, Roland Toutain, Catherine Damet, Lita Recio, and Jean-Marie Simon (billed as "Poupy Simon"). Note that star/dialogue writer Jean-Pierre Aumont used his influence to get his wife Maria Montez cast as the lead in this movie. She was 37 and did her best in the role, but the movie likely would have been stronger with a different actress. Just two years later, she would drown in a bath tub (some say she had a heart attack). She was just 39 years old.

If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know.
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this French one-panel, which is a "country of origin" poster for this French movie! Not only that, but we have also never auctioned ANY French poster from this movie.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had an extra vertical fold 1/2" to the left of the regular right vertical fold, with many creases, scuffs, and darkening down the area around the two folds. It had a lesser amount of wear on the other folds and some pinholes around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
