An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) John Brophy's Immortal Sergeant, the 1943 John Stahl World War II (WWII) military romantic melodrama (based on the novel by John Brophy; about a Canadian soldier in the British army in North Africa, and he worries about his girl back home and how he will do when his mentor, a tough sergeant, is killed in action) starring Henry Fonda, Maureen O'Hara, Thomas Mitchell, Allyn Joslyn, Reginald Gardiner, Melville Cooper, Bramwell Fletcher, and Morton Lowry. Note that Henry Fonda was made "Canadian" in this movie to explain why he was the only one without an English accent, and that immediately after this movie, Fonda (not unlike Mister Roberts) enlisted in the Army so that he could actually play a role in the real war. After he got out, he played Mister Roberts on stage, and ended up in that role for six years, and over 1,600 performances! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster had tiny paper loss at the crossfolds and some surface paper loss and small tears on parts of the folds. It had pinholes and tape stains around the edges, with some tears in the top border that extended into the image. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Note that either the restorer who mounted the poster did not leave any excess linen around the edges of the poster, or possibly the owner of the poster chose to carefully trim off the excess, so that the poster would fit in a frame.
