An Original Undated (likely 1947, from the first Czech release right after World War II) Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Czechoslovakian Movie Poster (measures 11 1/2" x 36 1/2" [29 x 93 cm]) (Learn More) Victor Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the classic 1939 William Dieterle romantic love triangle horror melodrama ("Ten times a thousand thrills!"; "BIG beyond words! ...Wondrous beyond belief! ...Magnificent beyond compare!"; adapted from the novel by Victor Hugo) starring Charles Laughton (in the title role as Quasimodo, the hunchback), Cedric Hardwicke (billed as "Sir Cedric Hardwicke"; as Frollo), Thomas Mitchell, Maureen O'Hara (as Esmerelda), Edmond O'Brien (as Gringoire, the poet), Alan Marshal, Walter Hampden, Katharine Alexander, Harry Davenport, Helene Whitney, Katherine Alexander, George Zucco, Fritz Leiber, Etienne Girardot, Minna Gombell, Arthur Hohl, George Tobias, Rod La Rocque, and Spencer Charters. Note that this was a wonderful sound remake of the classic 1923 silent movie starring Lon Chaney Sr. and Patsy Ruth Miller in the lead roles. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that, immediately after World War II, the U.S. occupied Japan and part of Germany, and many American movies were shown in both countries between 1945 and the end of the occupation. Most of the Japanese posters we have seen from that period and a few posters from other occupied countries, as well as many of the German programs from the same period have a "Motion Picture Export Association" circular printed logo on the poster or program, and apparently this was a program run in conjunction with the U.S. government. Since there were many U.S. servicemen in Japan and Germany at this time, many of these posters and programs have the title written in both Japanese (or German) and in English, and they are from the first release of that movie in that country. This is a Czech poster that has the same Motion Picture Export Association logo, so we assume they also distributed the movies to Czechoslovakia in that same time period, and since we have seen a German program with the same logo that was dated 1947, we think it is surely from 1947 as well. Also note that this poster has been paperbacked. What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster was folded across the middle and it had minor wear on that fold. It had a crease across the upper part of the image going through the green head, with some wear on that crease and a pinhole near the top center and in the lower left. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well! Learn More about condition grades
