An Undated (probably late 1930s or early 1940s) Re-Release Theatrical Linenbacked Argentinean Movie Poster (measures 29" x 43" [74 x 109 cm]) (Learn More) Victor Hugo's Les Miserables, the classic 1935 Richard Boleslawski epic prisoner-on-the-run-hunted-throughout-the-years melodrama ("The greatest human story ever written becomes a screen triumph awaited by millions"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; based on the French novel by Victor Hugo, which was also the source for the long-running Broadway play; produced by Darryl F. Zanuck) starring Fredric March (as Jean Valjean), Charles Laughton (as Inspector Javert), Sir Cedric Hardwicke (as Bishop Bienvenu), Rochelle Hudson (as Cosette), Frances Drake (as Eponine), Florence Eldridge (as Fantine), John Beal (as Marius), Ferdinand Gottschalk (as Thenardier), Vernon Downing (as Brissac), and John Carradine. Note that there was a 1980 French musical stage play adapted from this classic book and movie, but it did not do well. In 1985, it was significantly expanded and changed into an English language play, which has gone on to become one of the most successful plays of all time, in London, on Broadway, and all over the world! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this late 1930s or early 1940s re-release Argentinean poster, and that was 9 years ago! Also note that this movie was produced by 20th Century Pictures in 1935. It was distributed by United Artists that year. Later that year, 20th Century Pictures was bought by Fox Film, and the combined company became 20th Century-Fox. The movie was then released as a 20th Century-Fox movie. We don't know when this occurred, but we imagine in the late 1930s or early 1940s. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking?
