eMoviePoster.comAuction History Result 7e210 CAPTAIN AMERICA linen stock 1sh R50s wonderful art of Marvel Comics superhero pointing gun! Date Sold 3/5/2013Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Undated (probably 1950s) Re-Release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Stock One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Captain America, the 1944 Elmer Clifton & John English Marvel Comics (at the time known as "Atlas Comics"!) comic book superhero crime fighting fantasy serial ("Based on the Character appearing in Captain America Comics"; "A Republic Serial in 15 Chapters") starring Dick Purcell (in the title role as Captain America; he died just a few months after shooting finished), Lorna Gray, Lionel Atwill, Charles Trowbridge, George J. Lewis, and John Hamilton. Note that this was the very first Marvel Comics character to be turned into a movie, and we don't know how faithful the adaptation was (in the movie, Captain America uses a gun, and we don't remember him ever doing that in the comics!). NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that this is an undated 1950s stock poster which explains why the poster designers threw in an image of Captain Marvel (an entirely different super hero) and the Purple Monster (a villain from the 1945 serial "The Purple Monster Strikes") who have no connection to the Captain America serial whatsoever! These posters were created with a blank section in the center where the title of the film being shown could be added (either with a paper snipe or, as is the case with this poster, overprinted). Also note that this poster reads "A Republic Picture" at lower right and not "A Republic Serial" as we have seen on posters in the past. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking? Learn More UPDATED 02/27/2013: Note that a knowledgeable collector tells us that this poster is a 1950s stock poster and NOT a 1940s poster as we initially listed. We have updated the auction accordingly. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had small paper loss at the top crossfold and tiny paper loss at the other two crossfolds. There was small paper loss in the background to the right of the "T" of "CAPTAIN" in the title. There was a diagonal tear running from the middle of the second "A" of "CAPTAIN" to the top of the second "A" of "AMERICA". There were scuffs and tiny bits of paper loss on parts of some foldlines. The borders were folded over at one time and there are staple holes, tears, and some tiny paper loss around the edges. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects. Learn More about condition grades
