An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More)

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, the classic 1939 Alfred L. Werker detective mystery crime thriller sequel ("Based on the play 'Sherlock Holmes' by William Gillette with the permission of the executors of the late Sir Arthur Conan Doyle") starring Basil Rathbone (in the title role as Sherlock Holmes), Nigel Bruce (as Dr. Watson), Ida Lupino, Alan Marshal, Terry Kilburn, George Regas, Henry Stephenson, and E.E. Clive. Note that this is the second Basil Rathbone & Nigel Bruce Sherlock Holmes movie, and it was released by 20th Century Fox, as was their first film, "The Hound of the Baskervilles". All subsequent Rathbone & Bruce Sherlock Holmes movies were released by Universal!

Important Added Info: Note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. Also note that this lobby card has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the lobby card was backed onto a very light paper backing (acid-free), that keeps the "feel" of the lobby card similar to that of the original lobby card. Some restorers prefer to paperback lobby cards on to a heavy backing, while others prefer to use a very lightweight backing. The advantage of a lightweight backing is that the card still "feels" like a regular lobby card, but a heavier backing makes restoration easier to do and less noticeable.

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. Prior to paperbacking, the card had staining in the bottom 2" of the left half of the card, affecting the title and credits box and the bottom of the stars' clothes. It also had paper loss in the left of the bottom border, mostly in the border area, but slightly extending into the bottom of Lupino's dress. There was a 1" tear in the left of the bottom border, just above the staining. There was slight staining in the rest of the borders and a pinhole in each top corner, and one in the bottom center of the image, with tiny paper loss in the bottom right corner. Other than the exact above defects (primarily the staining described above), the lobby card was in pretty nice condition prior to paperbacking. Someone backed the card onto a thin paper backing, and they only performed light restoration to the above defects, likely because they did not want to paint over those areas. The staining in the lower left described above is slightly noticeable, but not very distracting, unless you specifically look at that area. Please read the above carefully and look at our super-sized image before bidding on this wonderful card.
