An Original Vintage French Trade Ad (measures 9 1/2" x 12 1/4" [24 x 31 cm]) (Learn More) The Folies Bergere is a cabaret music hall established in 1869 in Paris, France. Revues featured extravagant costumes, sets and effects, and often nude women. In 1926, Josephine Baker caused a sensation at the Folies Bergere by dancing in a costume consisting of a skirt made of a string of artificial bananas and little else. It has been the stage for many other famous acts including: Maurice Chevalier, Fernandel, W.C. Fields, Ella Fitzgerald, and many, many more! Artist: Walery Important Added Info: Note that Josephine Baker was a black African American stage performer, singer, and actress from the 1920s to the 1970s. She went to Europe and achieved enormous success (and notoriety) in the Follies Bergere and other shows, because she danced nude in some of her dances. Walery (born Stanislaw Julian Ignacy Ostrorog) was a Polish photographer active in London and Paris between 1890 and 1929. He achieved acclaim with his series of photographs of Josephine Baker, published in 1926, and one of his photos of Baker is on the cover of this trade ad. Note that this trade ad is blank on the back. We don't know if it was an insert for a program, or an insert for a magazine, or distributed in some other way. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Also note that this item contains some nudity, so we have placed a white bar over those areas for those who are bothered by such images. Of course, the actual item does not have the white bars. Condition: good to very good. The trade ad has a slightly diagonal fold near the center, with some creases around the edges and a tiny tear in the right border (see our images).
