An Original Vintage German Ross Postcard Album (100 pages containing 368 cards in all; measures 9 1/2" x 15 1/4") (Learn More)

Ross postcards were created in Germany from the 1920s to the 1940s. They were often given to the people who attended a movie and could be sent through the mail (each had a picture of one of the movie's stars on it, and standard postcard markings on the other side). They were also sent to theaters where the stars would make personal appearances, and members of the audience would get the stars to autograph them if they could, but of course, the cards themselves did not come autographed! Sometimes the theaters would cut four slits in the upper left of the front cover of the program for that movie and have the "Ross postcards" inserted into that area, so that the audience members would get the program and the card together! We imagine that theaters hoped that audience members would mail the postcards after they saw the movie to friends, telling them how much they enjoyed it, thus creating advertising for the movie. These are often called "Ross autograph cards" by collectors, because moviegoers did often obtain autographs on them. Ross postcards are quite collectible, signed or unsigned, but of course, they are worth far more signed. They are often quite rare, because most German paper of all kinds from before World War II was destroyed during the war, due to the massive paper shortages there at that time.
Important Added Info: Note that this is a really remarkable find! Ross postcards are pretty rare (see above), and this is an album that someone filled with an amazing collection of 368 Ross postcards, and they range from the early 1920s to the very early 1930s! There was actually space for even more than what is in the album (perhaps a total of 400), but I have never seen anything approaching this quantity before (before seeing this, I would have said that finding 50 at once was a lot!). Better yet, the cards are not glued into the album. They are all loosely inserted into diagonal slits created for that purpose. Almost all of the cards are in virtually perfect condition, with only the slightest of wear, and most are bright white (surely they did not age as many other Ross cards did, because they were "protected" from the elements by being inside this album ever since the cards were created. They are absolutely all from when they were first created. Better yet is the selection of stars represented! There are 17 different Charlie Chaplin cards, 13 different Louise Brooks cards, 8 different Brigitte Helm cards (including a wonderful one from Metropolis showing the robot!), 12 different Greta Garbo cards, and on and on, with Buster Keaton, Conrad Veidt, Mary Pickford, and many, many others. We have pictured 26 of the interior pages to give you a sense of just how wonderful the selection and condition of these cards is!

Condition: very good to fine. The album has very minor wear on the covers. The interior cards are in exceptional condition (see above). There are some places in the album where there are no cards. We don't know if there were originally others in those places, but it would seem more likely that the collector who assembled the album just didn't have enough for every page, because if someone had taken any of the cards, they surely would have taken the Metropolis one!
