An Original Vintage Linenbacked World War I Army Recruiting Poster (measures 30" x 40 1/4") (Learn More)

Columbia Calls, the 1916 U.S. World War I (WWI) military recruiting poster ("Enlist now for U.S. Army. Nearest recruiting station"; note that this poster includes a poem by Frances Adams Halstead) encouraging men to join the Army, and featuring Frances Adams Halsted and Vincent Aderente art of Columbia (an early symbol for America) standing on a globe and holding a flag and a sword. Interestingly, at the top of the poem is a swastika. Of course, in 1916, this was in no way a negative symbol, for this was long before Adolf Hitler thought to adopt this sign as the symbol of his Nazi party!

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had two 1" tears in the left and right of the flag (to the left and right of the hand), and two smaller tears in the flag at the bottom right of the blue area. There were tears and tiny paper loss in the blue background above the "IST" of "ENLIST" in the lower left. There were tears, creases, tape stains, and tiny paper loss around the edges of the poster. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was mounted on a very thin linen, with no excess border, and if I owned this great poster, I would surely have it re-backed and have the above basically minor defects professionally touched up, so the poster would look its best, but I would well imagine many collectors being able to frame the poster as is and enjoy it, as the border defects would not show, and the defects within the image are not very distracting.
