The strip took its name from the 1885 poem "Little Orphant [sic] Annie" by James Whitcomb Riley. The plot follows the wide-ranging adventures of Annie, her dog Sandy and her benefactor Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks. There were many comic books as well, and two movies, one in 1932 and one in 1938, with Mitzi Green and Ann Gillis in the title role. There was a very successful Broadway play which has twice been made into live action movies.
