Date Sold 6/6/2013Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Australian Daybill Movie Poster (db; measures 13" x 28 3/4" [33 x 73 cm]) (Learn More) Night Plane from Chungking, the 1943 Ralph Murphy China World War II (WWII) war-time Nazi airplane aviation action thriller ("The Japs tried to write 'ZERO' to their love!"; "It's a bombshell of a picture!"; "Thrilling! Romantic! Timely"; "Based on a Story by Harry Hervy"; a remake of "Shanghai Express", but updated to World War II and substituting planes for trains) starring Robert Preston, Ellen Drew, Otto Kruger, Steven Geray, and Soo Young NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Richardson Studio Important Added Info: Note that this is a really odd daybill! It has no borders, like some untrimmed RKO daybills of this time, but we know that this one is trimmed, because it is from the Richardson Studio, and it does not have their credit at the bottom, so that must have been trimmed off, along with the blank borders. We have also seen a one-color 10" x 30" version of this daybill with the same art (but one-color), and that DOES have Richardson Studio info at the bottom. We asked Australian poster expert Phil Edwards to explain this to us, and he told us that he believes that this full-color poster IS the first release poster (because he said not all posters from during the war were 10" x 30"), and that the one-color 10" x 30" version was likely printed when they ran out of color ones, and needed some quick replacements! That sounds good to us, so please know that this is the first release Australian daybill from 1943 (or soon after), but that it has had all of its blank borders trimmed, including the Richardson Studio credit at bottom. Condition: good to very good. The poster had all of its blank borders trimmed off, including the Richardson Studio credit written below the bottom left of the art . It has two extra horizontal folds above and below the regular top one, and one extra fold below the regular bottom two, with one less extra fold between the top and middle crossfolds.
